Discover Envoy

What is Envoy?

Envoy is the latest in access software for the Mac OS X. It is keyboard and mouse replacement software designed to work with the IntelliSwitch wireless switch interface. Envoy is designed for individuals with physical disabilities, and those who are not able to access the Macintosh with the tradition keyboard or mouse.

How does it work?

  • Pointing Setups (On-Screen Keyboards or OSK): Envoy will allow users of alternative pointing devices, such as the Tracker from Madentec, access to an on-screen keyboard. All keyboard functions can be controlled from these “virtual” keyboards, as well as many scripted computer functions, like launching an application.
  • Scanning Setups (Automatic Scanning): Envoy also gives one switch automatic scanning and two switch step scanning access to the computer through scanning on-screen Setups. Activation of the switch will bring up a scan array and advance the “scan hilite” to move from one item to the next. Each switch activation selects the hilited item. In this manner, all keyboard and mouse functions can be accessed through the use of a single switch.

Features & Benefits

Choice of input method

Choose scanning (Scan Setups), or on-screen keyboards (Point Setups). Access Point Setups with any mouse pointing device. Access Scan Setups with the IntelliSwitch, wireless switch interface.

Auditory feedback

Setups may have preset auditory cueing and feedback for each key. Auditory feedback can be Text-to-Speech using the built in QuickTime voices, or it can be pre-digitized speech.

Setups

Setups are included that allow access to the entire computer. Older Discover OS 9 Setups, that users may be familiar with, can easily be converted for use with Envoy for Mac OSX. So no need to recreate them.

Flexible user preferences

Select the scanning speed, mouse speed, type of scanning and many other settings to match user's access needs.

Advanced dwell features

Point Setups can be access by clicking directly or by dwelling. An new advanced feature called Cumulative Dwell now assist with making selections.

Cumulative Dwell explained

Some may find it difficult to dwell on a key long enough for a selection to be made or may lack the control to hold the cursor steady. With this feature, a key will begin to “fill up” as you move onto it. If you move off, it will slowly “empty” out. This is similar to a bucket and a garden hose. Imagine a series of buckets next to each other, and as you move the garden hose from one to the other, they each begin to fill up. Eventually the one you leave the hose in the longest will fill to the top. The key that you dwell on the most will eventually fill and be selected.

Keyboard Keys

A keyboard key is a button which will perform all the functions of a conventional keyboard. When you select a modifier key, such as the shift key, the on-screen keyboard will dynamically switch to show each of the keys as a capital letter. This feature applies to all other modifier keys, such as the command and option keys. In addition, if you change your standard keyboard to an international keyboard, such as French or Spanish, the keyboard keys will automatically change to represent the special keys used by these languages.

3. How do I pair my Intelliswitch?

Occasionally the Intelliswich will lose its "pairing" with the wireless USB dongle. To pair it with the Intelliswitch you'll need a paperclip or the pairing tool that came with your Intelliswitch.

  1. Ensure that the USB dongle/stick is plugged into the computer
  2. Ensure that the USB cable is detached from the intelliswitch and computer.
  3. Ensure that the Intelliswitch has battery power. (When you press on the Intelliswitch the little red light should flash)
  4. Push one end of the paperclip into the little hole above the letter "C". The dongle should blink.
  5. Flip the Intelliswitch over and you should see a hole of similar-size. Push the paperclip into this hole.
  6. There should be a series of flashes between the dongle and the intelliswitch with one long-flash.

4. My Intelliswitch doesn't work

If Discover Pro or a program on your computer is not responding to your button presses on the Intelliswitch.

Please try the following:

  1. Verify that the Intelliswitch Control Panel is installed by looking for a Red or Blue USB icon in your system tray. If there is no icon with the letters USB then please reinstall the Intelliswitch Control Panel.
  2. Toggle the black switch on the side of the intelliswitch and see if the Red USB turns to Blue. If it turns blue then the switch is working. Further, check to see if Discover Pro under Mode is checked when you click on the USB icon.
  3. Try taking the battery out of the Intelliswitch and connect it to the computer using the USB cable (without a battery inside the Intelliswitch) see if it the USB Icon turns from Red to Green when you press a switch or toggle the side switch.
  4. Check to make sure that the USB Wireless dongle is paired with the Intelliswitch: When you press on the switch the wireless dongle should light up. If it does not please follow the instructions on how to pair it.

5. Where are my setups?

There will be times when you want to copy your setups for back-up purposes or sharing purposes. To access the folder containing your setups:

In Windows

  1. Start -> Run (or press on the Windows Key and R)
  2. Copy/Paste or type in the following: %APPDATA%
  3. (Note that you have to type in the percent symbol before and after the word appdata)
  4. A window should popup containing many folders. One of which should be labeled "Discover". Double-click to expand that folder. All your setups should be in a sub-folder there.

In Mac

  1. Generally, setups are kept in the path "Applications/Envoy/Setups"

6. Can I install more than one copy of the software?

Yes you can! However, the Product Code will only allow for one activation at any given time. This means that if you want to switch between computers you will need to deactivate on the current computer you are using before moving to the new computer. This process is easy and simple: simply click on "deactivate" and you're done.

7. Do I have to enter in the product code each time I activate?

No, once you enter the product code for that software once into that computer. That computer will remember the product code even after you deactivate it. The next time you go to activate the software the product code should automatically be entered for you.

8. Do I need to always be on the Internet?

Our new software (version 2.300 and newer) use a new activation system which lets you switch to using the software between different computers. This is all done by activating/deactivating through the internet with the 16 character Product Code you receive when you purchase the software. If you don't have an internet connection, no problem! An alternate way of activating/deactivating your software will be displayed on the screen.

9. What is Activation/Deactivation?

By default all the software we starts in "Demo" or evaluation mode. This means you get to use the software and ALL its features for 30 days. Once the 30 days are complete you will then have to call in to purchase or extend your evaluation period. Activating or Activations happens when you click on the button "Activate" or "Activate Now" and enter in the 16 character Product Code. This process removes the 30-day restriction and allows you to use the software as long as you want. Deactivating/Deactivation is used when you want to use the same Product Code on a different computer. Simply click "Deactivate" and then you should be able to enter the same Product Code on another computer.
