Frequently Asked Questions
1. Discover Crashes with a Run Time error.
Abnormal program termination, C++ error. The cause of the error is due to the Discover User preferences becoming corrupted. The cause of the preferences becoming corrupted is very difficult to pin point, and can literally be caused by a seemingly endless list of items.
However, the most common cause to date, has been some kind of speech conflict. Discover uses Via Voice version 4.1, and may not be compatible with other speech engines.
(Other documents will address speech conflicts).
Instructions:
To correct the error do the following:
- Double click on my My Computer so that a Windows Explorer Window opens.
- In the address location, at the top of the window, type in: %appdata%
- This will take you to the Application Data folder, which is normally hidden.
- Browse to: Discover/Preferences (Meaning open the Discover folder and then open the Preferences folder within it.
- Go to the View menu item for this window, and select "Details".
- There Discover preference file that is corrupted will show up as being 0KB, when you look in the "Size" column for each file. The file will also end with the extension .pre.
- Right click the file that is 0KB in size and select "Delete".
- We now must recreate the new preference file. If the user type was a scanning or "Switch" user, then we must duplicate the file title "Discover Switch.dft". Right click on this file and select "Copy". Next right click in the window and select "Paste".
- You should now have a new file titled "Copy of Discover Switch.dft". Right click on the file and select "Rename". Delete the words "Copy of ", including the space after the word "of". Change the extension from .dft to .pre. The new file should now read "Discover Switch.pre".
- Restart the computer. Discover should now boot properly.
Please note that performing this procedure will reset your Discover Preferences back to the Factory Default. So items such as "scan speed" and "scan method" will need to be changed back to your personal settings.
2. Can I install more than one copy of the software?
Yes you can! However, the Product Code will only allow for one activation at any given time. This means that if you want to switch between computers you will need to deactivate on the current computer you are using before moving to the new computer. This process is easy and simple: simply click on "deactivate" and you're done.
3. Do I have to enter in the product code each time I activate?
No, once you enter the product code for that software once into that computer. That computer will remember the product code even after you deactivate it. The next time you go to activate the software the product code should automatically be entered for you.
4. Do I need to always be on the Internet?
Our new software (version 2.300 and newer) use a new activation system which lets you switch to using the software between different computers. This is all done by activating/deactivating through the internet with the 16 character Product Code you receive when you purchase the software. If you don't have an internet connection, no problem! An alternate way of activating/deactivating your software will be displayed on the screen.
5. How do I manually start Discover?
If you want to manually start Discover you can go to the following location on your computer: C:\DonJonston\Discover\ Double-click the file labeled "DiscoverBoot.exe" Discover should then start up regularly.

By default all the software we starts in "Demo" or evaluation mode. This means you get to use the software and ALL its features for 30 days. Once the 30 days are complete you will then have to call in to purchase or extend your evaluation period. Activating or Activations happens when you click on the button "Activate" or "Activate Now" and enter in the 16 character Product Code. This process removes the 30-day restriction and allows you to use the software as long as you want.
