Frequently Asked Questions
General
- What is an ECU?
An ECU is an Environmental Control Unit designed to help physically impared people better function with their day to day activities. An Environmental Control Unit (ECU) is a means to purposefully manipulate and interact with the environment by alternately accessing one or more electrical devices via switches, voice activation, remote control, computer interface, and other technological adaptations. The purpose of an ECU is to maximize functional ability and independence in the home, school, work and leisure environment. - Will an ECU interfere with other household members ability to operate lights, computer, etc.?
No. An ECU provides the means for the handicapped person to perform a function but does not interfere with the typical mode of operation. - Will my insurance pay for an ECU?
Many insurances will cover the cost of an ECU. Funding can also be found through organizations such as Easter Seals, Veterans Associations and Knights of Columbus.
Technical
- How often should I replace the back-up battery?
Batteries should be replaced about every two years. - Do I need to modify my home electrically or otherwise?
No, just plug in the ECU like you do a tv and you're ready to operate it. - My home took a lightning hit - why won't my ECU work right now?
Just as a tv might need to be reprogrammed after a power loss, the same could occur to an ECU. A reset to your unit may be all you need to do to be back in operation (see USERS Manual for reset instructions). If this doesn't work it could be that the damage was more severe. Call Accessibility Services to determine if your unit needs to be returned for repair.
Before purchasing an environmental control, we strongly recommend the following guidelines:
- Find a dealer who specializes in environmental controls. This dealer needs to work with you and your team of therapists, caregivers, case managers to procure the best possible equipment for your needs. This dealer needs to not only be able to train you on the equipments use, but also be able to provide on-going service for your equipment. Remember, the best of equipment is only as good as the support you receive before, during and after the equipment has been provided.
- Using the team approach of professionals, evaluate what you would like to control in your home, and what you must control in your home. Try also to look ahead to future needs.
- Try to get the best product and solution for your needs, based on the available funding.
- Before the equipment is finally prescribed, ask the dealer to talk to you about the manufacturer of the equipment, how long they have been in business, warranties, references, and their dealer support structure.
- Make sure that the equipment fits your needs, how you will interface with the equipment, what other items may be needs for this equipment to work (i.e.-do you need to own your own computer), what happens if there is a power failure and how it is remotely used from the wheelchair. How will you be trained. Is the equipment flexible enough to change if your needs change?
